Bristol Business Park Providing Commercial Property to Let
Long Ashton lies in the picturesque countryside just outside Bristol on its south western side. It is a popular commuter area, with access into the centre of Bristol or Clifton within a few minutes.
Long Ashton Business Park now occupies the site of a farm complex which has existed for over 750 years. It was originally the home of Baron Jeon d’Ashton, who was the first lord of Ashton Phillipps (the original manor of Long Ashton). Three of the buildings are named after Baron d’Ashton’s other manors – Ashton Theynes, Ashton Lyons and Ashton Merietts. The name of Ashton Phillipps has otherwise been reserved.
The site has a colourful history. Sir Richard Ap Meryck who owned the manor in the 15th century sponsored the Cabot voyages to the New World in 1497 and 1503. Some historians are certain America was named after him.
Later the manor was acquired by the Smythes of Ashton Court and became the dower house to Ashton Court mansion, and re-named “The Lower Court”. The widow of Sir Hugh Smythe went on to marry Sir Fernando Gorges who became the Governor or New Somersetshire, one of England’s first colonies in North America. With their removal back to Ashton Court, The Lower Court lost its prominence and became the Home Farm to the Ashton Court Estate.
In 1947, the estate was broken up to pay Death Duties and Lower Court Farm was sold out for single ownership after over 300 years.
The redundant farm buildings were renovated in 1989 to become Long Ashton Business Park.
